1 Apr 1942 - the Division was activated at Fort Knox, Kentucky, with Brig.
Gen. Thomas J. Camp as commanding officer.

13 Apr 1942 - Brig. Gen. William M. Grimes replaces Gen. Camp as commanding
officer.

Jun 1942 to Jan 1943 - the Division conducts training of 10,833 cadre
personnel for the 9th to 14th Armored Divisions.

While stationed at Fort Knox, the Division was the official military guardian
of the United States Gold Vault.

Jan 1943 - moved from Fort Knox, KY to Camp Campbell KY.

Jan 1943 - sent over 4,000 replacements to the 1st Armored Division after the
Battle of Kasserine Pass in Tunisia.

Mar 1943 - moved to North Camp Polk, LA. Took over vehicles and equipment of the departing 7th Armored Division.

Mar 1943 - Sep 1943 - took part in the Mobilization Program designed to mold
the Division into an effective combat organization.

Sep 1943 - completed reorganization from the old style triangular division to
the new 'light' armored division.

Dec 1943 - participated in the 'D' Series training exercises preparing for
full scale maneuvers.
