May-November, 1945

  • 1 May - the 58th Inf. loses two men to snipers which are then killed since they would not surrender.
  • 2 May - the 58th Inf. loses an officer and three more men when a powder plant blows up in Munchshaf. Sabotage was suspected. It is believed that these were the last official wartime casualties of the Division.
  • 8 May - 30 May - The Division remains on occupation duty and continues to cleanup stragglers and small pockets of resistance.
  • 30 May - The Division is assigned to Third Army. It is relieved by units of the British Army and begins to move to the Pilsen, Czechoslovakia area.
  • 1 Jun - 19 Sep - As the point system went into effect for returning home, many men were shipped out during this period. Those remaining were sent to various I & E (Information and Education) training schools. Very little other training was done.
  • 19 Sep - The Division began the 600 mile trip to Camp Oklahoma City near Rheims,France for deployment home.
  • 26 Oct - The last 180 mile trip from Camp Oklahoma City to Camp Phillip Morris at LeHarve, France was started and the Division was officially dismounted, but no one cared.
  • 13 Nov - The Division was deactivated on 13 November 1945 at Camp Patrick Henry, VA by Gen. Charles F. Colson.
