The Archive Project Has been Cancelled
The Eighth Armored Division Association was disbanded in 2009 after 60 very successful years of holding reunions and other functions to continue the relationships we developed while members of the Division. The Archives Project, in effect, has also been terminated but the Archives Committee proposes to continue accepting additions and/or changes to roster information for a short period. Many men who served have not been found as yet and any new information is welcomed. We will also try to post photos, memoirs, stories, etc. to the website from men who would still like to contribute..
The Purpose is to find the names of the men who served in the Division and to show what actions the Division participated in. We are also interested in receiving copies of pictures, stories, maps, memoirs, rosters, etc. that anyone would like to share with us.
The online submission of information has been terminated but anyone who would like to contribute something of interest can send copies in an email to the webmaster as long as the website is maintained.
Here are some of the things we are still looking for:
Personal information for men who are not on a unit roster.
- Your name, rank and army serial number. (Many men had the same name.)
- Battalion and company you served with.
- Did you come to the 8th from ASTP, Air Corps, ROTC, etc.
- Did you receive any awards such as Silver Star, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, etc.
- Do you remember who your officers were? eg, Battalion and company commander and platoon leader. We are missing the names of a lot of these commanders.
- Optional information: your current home address and email address if you wish. With your permission it can also be posted on our 'Bulletin Board' page with requests to friends who you would like to contact.
Other personal information
- Names and information of other men in your unit that you remember. Check the roster for your unit. It shows all the names we have located so far.
- Name and information of men who have passed away. Supply hometown, state and date of death if possible.
- Your name and relationship - son, daughter, army buddy, etc.
- Provide any comments or suggestions you may wish to make.
- We have the names of over 1,000 men that we have not been able to associate with their units. These are shown on the Unknowns Rosters (there are 9 web pages of them). Any help you can give in finding the unit of these men will be appreciated.
AND
We are looking for Army information and records such as:
- General Orders - we are missing several of the 105 GO's that were issued. See List
- Maps - any kind of detailed maps of the actions the Division participated in.
- Unit rosters - we currently have the names of about 11,000 men who served. The total number is not known.
- Personal records of unit movements, actions, activities, etc. of your unit - but not your personal diaries unless you want to share them with us.
- Troop movement orders for transfers from the Air Corps, ASTP units, ROTC, etc. These help supply the names of men who served in the 8th. We specifically need rosters of ASTP men transferred from the University of Detroit and from North Central College.
- Pictures - personal pictures you and your friends are shown in. Please identify the men in the photos, if possible, since we all have trouble remembering names these days.
- Pictures of vehicles and other items of intrest to others.
- Any other kind of items that you think would be of interest to other generations who will be reviewing the data some day.
Please do not send originals of anything you do not want to lose. Most of these items will go into the archives and will not be returned. If you have a computer with a scanner attached, sending scanned copies of pictures or records is probably the best way to submit these items. This is also the easiest format (.jpg) for us to process and post.
The only personal information placed on the web site will be name, rank, unit, awards, and date of death for information purposes. Awards posted from Army General Orders also contain the Army Serial Number of the individual and the state he entered service from. Some men who have email addresses have asked that these be added to the 'Bulletin Board' page so friends can contact them.
