Travels Of The 80th Tank Bn - Service Company - In ETO (Page 2)

1 Apri1 1945

Left Zweckel at 1255, arrived at Bork, Germany 1625. Ruhr Valley cut off by 1ink-up of 2nd Arm'd. and 9th Arm'd. at Paderborn. Division pulled off pocket to fall in behind units of 2nd Arm'd. to hold flanks. Division relieved by 95th Inf. Division.

2 April 1945

Left Bork 1340 enroute to Paderborn.

3 April 1945

Arrived Elsen 1140 and departed at 1655, with destination Lippstadt. Army Intelligence had found that there were two German Armies and at least one Panzer Division in Ruhr pocket. Division Orders changed and sent back to cut into Ruhr pocket so Infantry could take over.

4 April 1945

Arrived Lippstadt at 0240.

9 Apri1 1945

Departed from Lippstadt at 1255 and arrived in Soest at 1350. Battalion in action south of Soest, also to the west. Fighting severe all through this sector.

10 April 1945

Left Soest at 1425, arrived at Westonnen at 1625. Battalion fought toward west on left flank of Division with left flank exposed to German fire from across Ruhr River. Elements of 17th Airborne Division, on south side of river but at some distance to the rear, unable to catch up to this division.

14 April 1945

Left Westonnen at 0805. This was last action of Division. We were relieved by 17th Airborne Division. At fall of the Ruhr pocket approximately 300,000 prisoners had been taken, including dead and wounded, also cutting off the largest source of war materials in Germany.

15 April 1945

Arrived Wedtlenstedt 0630.

16 April 1945

Departed from Wedtlenstedt at 0810, through Braunschweig (Brunswick) arriving at Strobeck at 1825.

21 April 1945

Left Strobeck, Germany at 1720; arrived in Gos1ar 2010. Battalion took up duties of occupying forces. Also worked at repatriation of Allied PWs and Displaced Persons. Battalion units located in Harz Mountains had trouble with SS troops and "Werewolves" caused considerable nuisance raids.

8 May 1945

V-E DAY

9 May 1945

Left Goslar at 0920, arrived in Hattorf at 1205. Territory in this area came under British control as British had this section allotted for occupation.

5 June 1945

Departed from Hattorf at 0805 to area one mile south of Weimar. Approximately two kilometers from this area was infamous Buchenwald concentration camp. Weather fine, warm, and mostly traveled on Autobahn.

6 June 1945

Left Weimar at 0530 and arrived in bivouac area 2 miles north of Weiden at 2105.

7 June 1945

Left Weiden, at 0530 and arrived in Stankov, Czechos1ovakia at 1315. Some of battalion units located in Seudeten and as occupying forces. Czechoslovakia, as a 1iberated country, has no occupation troops.
