BATTALION HISTORY
August 1945

The month of August witnessed the passing of many men of the original group of the Battalion. On August 4th, 123 enlisted men were transferred to the 6th Armored Division, the 5th of August 40 enlisted men were transferred to the 4th Armored Division and on the 8th, 100 men were transferred to the 17th Reinforcement Depot.

As is obvious from the above, the Companies were left very shorthanded and men were called upon to take over duties with which they were not too familiar. These men put forth their best efforts and everything ran very smoothly and well.

Company 'C' was the only company that was up near to T/O strength, as their job of operating the Tricolor Airport at Pilsen, Czechoslovakia warranted it. Companies 'A' and 'B' were called upon during the month to furnish the usual engineer details.

A few men of the Battalion left for schooling under the I & E Program, to attend schools in France and England.

Passes and furloughs also continued through the month with men going to England and Paris, Riveria and Switzerland.

The following officer changes took place during the month:
Capt. Samuel H. Thomas, Asgd & Jd, CO., Company 'B'
1st Lt. Warren C. Hubbard, Asgd & Jd, Hqs. S/4
Capt. Harold J. Helbling- Bn Maint Off to S-3
1st Lt. Leonard Schwartz (Unasgd) to S/1.

Battalion strength as of August 1, 1945:
31 Officers, 2 Warrant Officers, 480 Enlisted Men

Battalion strength as of August 31, 1945:
12 Officers, 2 Warrant Officers, 275 Enlisted Men
