S - 2 AFTER ACTION REPORT
Period 040001 April 1945 to 032400 May 1945

1. Enemy situation at end of period:

No contact with the enemy. Activities confined to patroling, maintaining martial law in assigned area.

2. Enemy operations during the period:

No contact with the enemy at beginning of period.

  4 April 1945 - No contact with the enemy. Bn on the move.
  5 April 1945 - No contact with the enemy. Bn on the move.
  6 April 1945 - No contact with the enemy. Bn on the move.
  7 April 1945 - Bn in position - intermittent artillery fire - Bn in close support to Task Force.
  8 April 1945 - No artillery or SA Fire being received.
  9 April 1945 - Resistence stiffens as Bn moves forward - intermittent fire by artillery.
10 April 1945 - Resistence continues - occasional small cal artillery and mortar fire on our positions - column fired on necessitating Bn going into position along road - several counter-attacks repulsed - Approx 25 rounds landing in gun positions necessitating moving to alternate positions. Three casualties, 1 seriously wounded by mortar or small cal artillery shrapnel. It is quite evident that we are under observation at all times as we seem to be getting direct fire - close support of infantry and tanks.
11 April 1945 - Shelling of our position continues as the slightest movement draws medium cal artillery fire.
12 April 1945 - Resistance ceases - Bn released from present assignment.
13 April 1945 - No resistance - Bn moving.
14 April 1945 - No resistance - Bn moving.
15 April 1945 - Enemy activity consisting of ambushing trucks & small vehicles - med cal artillery fire coming from well selectd positions that are difficult to locate due unfavorable terrain & natural defenses.
16 April 1945 - Resistance continues - Approx. six rounds artillery landing in position - no casualties. ? activity increases.
17 April 1945 - Resistance continues - pocket diminishes. No shelling.
18 April 1945 - Resistance continues - pocket diminishes. No shelling.
19 April 1945
20 April 1945
- FOs with infantry pinned down - 1 officer & 1 sgt wounded by SA & while observing with Infantry.
21 April 1945 - Bn reld present mission.
22 April 1945 - Arrived Hann Munden.
23 April thru
  3 May 1945
- Maintaining martial law in area.
   

3.   Section Operations - The S-2 Section working in cooperation with the S-3 Section briefed observers & maintained communication with the observers while in contact with the enemy, The situation and operations maps were posted and pertinent friendly and enemy information kept up to the minute, by personal contact with front line troops. The Section was responsible for procurement and distribution of all maps used by the Bn. All information was sent to higher Hq. promptly and action reports hourly. All Burgemeisters were screened and it was found necessary to replace four of them. Several individuals whose activities before our occupation, made them dangerous to us, were arrested. All PWs located were cleared through the section. Displaced persons affairs, such as collection and census were taken care of by the S-2 Section.

4.   Weather & Terrain - The weather throughout the period was generally fair, though some bad weather was experienced. Visibility was poor to fair. The terrain was favorable to armored action.
